Following is the daily "Profile America" feature for Sept. 9 from the U.S. Census Bureau: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9: TELEVISION PREMIERS Profile America -- Monday, September 9. This is traditionally the month when the television networks premier their new shows. Among those seen for the first time in past September’s are the Carol Burnett Show, Star Trek and Oprah Winfrey. One of the most memorable programs to debut was MASH, about a mobile army surgical hospital during the Korean War. The series won many awards and lasted for 11 seasons. The closing program in 1983 was a national event, seen by nearly 8 out of 10 viewers across the country. Today, only 2 percent of U.S. homes do not have a television set. In fact, the average household has two or more sets, and two-thirds are hooked up to cable. Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, celebrating a century of providing the facts America needs.
