Isidore became a hurricane at the 5pm advisory based on RECON measurements of wind and pressure. It currently is moving WNW near 8 mph and that track is expected to continue the next 36 to 48 hours taking it over western Cuba over the next 24 hours. The environment around the circulation is becoming more favorable for development and with deep convection near its center rapid development is not out of the question the next 24 hours as it moves over western Cuba. The track is slow and in 72 hours we expect the circulation to be not very far NW of Cuba in the south-central Gulf of Mexico and strengthening and becoming larger in areal extent as high pressure to the north expands the tight pressure gradient of near gale force winds significantly. The track through about 60 hours has fair confidence beyond that time frame confidence drops rapidly as model tracks differ widely in response to missing or catching a trough in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Everyone from Mexico to south Florida should monitor the situation carefully over the next 3 to 5 days. If Isidore become a large circualation as we expect coastal impacts could be significant well removed from the hurricane’s center at any given time as high surf will very likely spread across most of the Gulf of Mexico. Potential impacts for western Cuba include flooding, primarly over higher terrain, and wind damage as it strengthens possibly to a category 2 before it hits the coast. ...
