Rep. Gregory Meeks Bestows Purple Heart Posthumously to Brother of World War II Veteran Hero in Surprise Ceremony Today (U.S. Newswire)

Today (Oct. 25) at 11 a.m., Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) of the Sixth Congressional District will surprise Queens resident Henry Drogin, with a hero’s award ceremony for his brother Leonard Drogin after a 47 year search to find out the circumstances of his brothers death. Henry Drogin 1st Class Boatswain Mate who served in the United States Navy would correspond to his older brother Leonard Drogin a Civil Engineer in the United States Army utilizing V mail (short letters to military personnel). Until one day all of Henry Drogin’s letters to his brothers were returned to him stamped deceased. His sister Pearl Blau tried to investigate and did so until the time of her death with out any success. A fire in 1974 in the national personnel records center in St. Louis Missouri stalled the search for over fifteen years. The fire destroyed thousands of records of veterans who served in World War II including Leonard Drogin. Then in 1998 Mr. Drogin and his daughter Loraine asked Congressman Meeks to look into the case. ...
