Blonde Redhead--"Misery Is A Butterfly" (Album Review)
Smartly swerving any city-centric pigeon-holes, NYC’s Blonde Redhead instead have historically looked towards Sonic Youth and Washington DC for inspiration, and here, curiously, Europe. Produced by Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto - though there’s no hard and fast evidence of his touch - ‘Misery Is A Butterfly’ splashes their sound with sultry pop sprinkles and a far broader pallet of instrumentation. Like an air-bushed Slint re-emerging with Stereolab as their chief influence, Blonde Redhead engulf their guitars beneath so many keyboard tinkerings. More Enon than Yeah Yeah Yeahs then, what this may like in bite, it more than makes up for in guile, particularly on the delectable Goldfrapp-esque opener ‘Elephant Woman’ and punchy pop closer ‘Equus’. This elegant ‘Misery…’ deserves your company.
