Variety - The world probably doesn't really need another tear-tugger about a child coping with absent parents. But low-budget Portuguese drama "Andre Valente" takes just such well-worn cloth and manages to cut something fairly elegant through nimble tailoring. Debutante helmer Catarina Ruivo's early training as an editor shows in pic's thoughtful pacing, suggesting how slowly time passes for 8-year-olds like the title protagonist (winningly embodied by Leonardo Viveiros). Pic won't do "Kolya" numbers, but could have better-than-average aud appeal as a niche release, despite patchy B.O. track record for most Portuguese fare.
