Variety - Taking as his inspiration Victor Hugo's assertion that "The human race is one big collective individual," Claude Lelouch sets out to interweave the fortunes of 24 characters --- himself included --- in "The Parisians," the first installment in his trilogy "Humankind." Ambitious HD-shot venture sports all of Lelouch's customary hallmarks, and, although all three parts taken together (Part 2 is already lensed) may achieve their own modest variation on "The Lord of the Rings"-style unity, Part 1 is underwhelming with a few bright spots.
