Variety - The gap between a young daydreamer's fantasies and his challenging realities is explored with a gentle touch and episodic routine in "Young Kees." Second-time helmer Andre van Duren's uncertain, CGI-heavy adaptation of Theo Thijssen's novel has the look of a Currier & Ives catalog. Although certain devices used to tell the story of a boy in 1895 Amsterdam suggest a children's film, the tone and length are geared for late teens and grown-ups --- who, however, are unlikely to respond. Beyond its good local release in late 2003 and fest activity, pic is unlikely to translate beyond the Dutch-language market.
