The Mini-Hookah
-Introduction The Mini-Hookah is, both in theory and design, a miniature hookah. Similar to a water pipe,
a hookah is a device invented in the northern regions of India around 1000 AD to smoke either opium or
hashish, but it’s popularity rose in Turkey at around 1650 AD, when people replaced the hashish with
moistened, flavored tobacco. The hookah I’ve designed is a small portable one, capable of being placed
in one’s pocket for easy transport or concealing. Though I cannot attest to this claim (because I’m not a big
pot smoker), other people who have used my mini-hookahs for toking-up have said that it’s like using a
water bong, only with more flavor and much more satisfying than a full sized hookah, which has a tendancy
to dilute the intensity of the weed. You can read more here and here.
-Materials
You will need to gather the following materials:
1 1oz. miniature Axe cannister – see notes
2ft. 5/16th in. surgical tubing
3in. 3/16th in. metal tubing – see notes
3in. 3/8th in. metal tube – see notes
1 bottle cap – metal beer bottle cap
some aluminum foil – thick, good stuff
Axe can – Drain the Axe can (flame thrower anyone?) and then pop off the plastic
cap and cut the center metal rising thing, so there is about a 1/2in. hole in
the top of the can.
3/16th in. metal tubing – This came from an old rabbit ear-style TV antenna.
3/8th in. metal tube – This came from an old, miniature camera tripod.
-Tools
You need the following tools:
soldering iron with solder
tin snips
needle nose pliers
some way to punch a hole (I used a screwdriver, but a hole punch would work too)
electrical tape
sandpaper
needle
-Construction
1.Punch a hole in the can just under just under the rim that rises at a 45degree angle. Make sure the
3/16th in. tube will fit.
2.Cut the 3/16th in tube into a 1in. section and a 2in. section. (Hint: If you used a TV antenna for the
tube, look at each edge to find a nice rounded one, use that for the 2in. section.)
3.Now take the 1in. section and use the needle nose pliers to widen the edge openings of the tube,
one much more than the other.
4.Use sandpaper to rough up the shiny sides of the tube, and solder it into the can’s hole. (Hint:
Pain in the ass.)
5.Take the 2in section and widen the non-rounded edge. Then insert the widened edge into the tube,
about ¾ in. inward. This is the mouthpiece.
6.Now take the 3/8th in. tube and trim it so it is 2 ½ in. and make 6 equidistant cuts about 1/4in. long
in one end of the tube. Then bend every other cut segment down.
7.Take the bottle cap and remove the plastic thing on the inside, then punch a 3/8th in. hole through
the cap.
8.Make sure the tube fits snugly.
9.Bend down every remaining standing segment over the inside of the cap.
10. Wrap tape around the bottom of the bottle cap, in such a way as to form a wedge.
11.Finally, place the other end of the surgical tube onto the soldered tube.
-Usage
1.Fill the can about 2/3 with water.
2.Take a square of foil and line the bottle cap, poking holes with the needle where the tube is.
3.Place the tobacco into this foil and cover with more foil. Poke holes in this foil too, only more

5.Place a hot coal on top of the foil assembly.
6.Suck. If you get water, then you added too much water, so just suck until no more water comes out.

Ap 09, 2006 1:24 am - hearts - a bong is better for weed, but still can be used with tobacco. a hookah is a much more defined bong that doesn’t actually incinerate the tobacco (or weed, for that matter), but heats it to the point of releasing smoke.

Apr 09, 2006 11:08 am - Nice egg. I’m a big fan of bongs and hookas because I can really appreciate their design. The only problem I see here is that the purpose of bongs, hookas r any waterpipe is to cool the smoke (and filter out that nasty shit). Since this quite small I don’t see how it could cool the smoke that well. Anyways, 4*s.

Pickaplex0v - that happened rarely [where the smoke was too hot], so add ice and you should be okay
Scooby7769 - WRONG!!!! the majority of hookahs have one hose, in recent years, multiple hose ones have been added. if you wanted to add another hose, repeat steps 1-5, but don’t expect alot of smoke.

May 19, 2006 2:03 am - so i just recently started smoking tobacco from a hookah and it is fucking awesome. the only thing that sucks is that me and my friends go to a hookah bar all the time because we never knew how to make one. but let me tell you-the first thing that i’m doing tomorrow is making one.
