Humane Mouse Trap
(Hey, the death penalty for humans is similar...)

.........Mouse traps are brutal. Most cause a decent amount of pain and suffering before the mouse expires. Snap traps (the most common, I believe) often break the mouses back, leaving it to die by internal bleeding. Poison is extremely painful, causing the mouse to contort, writhing in agony. Glue traps simply hold the mouse until it dies of dehydration. Not pretty.
.........The only humane traps out there are live traps... But they’re not popular, because you have to let the mouse go somewhere. People don’t want to have to handle a live mouse.
.........What I’m going to show you here is death by electric shock. Some people think it’s not humane, but realistically, it’s extremely fast. The mouse doesn’t have time to be in pain. It’s more humane than any of the popular traps on the market (listed above) other than the live trap.
.........I have to thank REResources... His Homemade Electric Fence & Bug Zapper egg was the inspiration for this egg. Click the link, read his egg. It’s killer! I gave him 5*...

The following instructions include HIGH VOLTAGE!

.........You MUST follow basic precautions when dealing with this circuit. Before handling or baiting the circuit, discharge the capacitor at least 3 times by shorting the grid with an insulated tool, such as a plastic handled screwdriver. DO NOT set this trap where domestic animals or children can come in contact with it. Warn other people in the area that the trap is set, and is dangerous. Most of all, USE COMMON SENSE!

.........On with the egg...

Materials:

Breadboard (4 1/2 in. X 6 in)
Disposable camera with flash
Heavy copper wire (6 ft.)
Twin lead wire (like speaker wire)

Tools:

Soldering iron
Solder
Utility knife (or any other sharp blade)
...I had tape in the pic, but I didn’t need it...

Assembly:
.

.........Start out by stripping the insulation from the heavy copper wire. You’ll need about 6 feet of bare wire.

.

.........Cut two pieces 10 inches long. Bend them into ’L’ shapes, so they fit on the breadboard like in the following image. These will make your ’rails’, and the first two ’cross leads’.

.

.........Solder them to the board, with about a 5/16 inch (~7mm) gap between the cross leads.

.

.........Alternate side to side, marking 5/16 inches (~7mm), until you’re out of coppered breadboard. Solder the L pieces at each mark.

.

.........Cut the rest of the cross leads from heavy wire so they almost reach all the way across. Leave a 5/16 inch (~7mm) gap. Solder them to the rails, alternating side to side, aligning them with the marks you made. Solder the other end of each cross lead to the board, so they can’t move.
*Note- It’s not necessary to make the ’h’ patterns I made. I’ll explain later...*

.

.........Disassemble the camera, and remove the battery. KEEP IN MIND these things work with 330 volts at high amperage and thousands of volts at low amperage. It can HURT you! Short the leads of the capacitor. If you need guidance on the procedure, see my egg, Big Arc from Junk, or search RE, or Google. I could go into detail here, but people are tired of seeing how to take them apart...

It should wind up looking similar to this:

The capacitor and the charge button are what we’re going to be dealing with here.

.

.........First, the button: Peel off the tape that holds the triangular piece of sheet metal to the board. Then bridge the connections with solder. This will make it constantly charge.

.

.........Next, the cap: Take a 6 inch piece of speaker wire and strip about 3/16 inch (5mm) of each end. Tin all the ends (coat them with solder). Solder wire to each lead of the capacitor.

.

.........The other ends simply get soldered to the ends of the rails. Polarity doesn’t matter.

.

.........Cut a slot in the camera case so the case fits over the wire. Put the camera back together.
That’s it!

.........Place it where the mouse frequents.Put the battery back in, and you should hear the high pitched whine... Charging. Put a little peanut butter in a soda cap. Place it in the center of the grid.
*Note- ^That’s why you don’t need the ’h’ pattern^*

.........The mouse will smell the peanut butter, and come investigate. When it steps onto the grid, it’ll bridge the gap between positive and negative. Because of the spacing, it will most likely bridge it from one foot to the other. The shock will travel through the mouse’s chest, and it’ll die. It’ll also probably spaz at the moment of the shock, causing it to leap off the grid. The camera will recharge, and be automatically reset for the next mouse.
.........For longer term use, you need either bigger batteries ( ’C’ or ’D’ cells), or a wall transformer. Be sure to keep it at one and a half volts DC.

.........You may want to incorporate a switch, and mount everything in a plastic or wooden box.
Here’s what mine looks like now...

.........Multiple caps are mounted on the cross leads... Two ’D’ cell batteries, so it lasts a lot longer... Stuffed all the electronics in the little box under the batteries... Mounted the grid in a wooden box with a plexiglass lid, and drilled five 3/4 inch holes for the mouse...

.........I know I’m going to get a lot of comments like ’That’s cruelty to animals!’, and ’Hurting animals is wrong!’, but considering the alternate traps that are widely accepted, this is humane.

Thanks for viewing, and as always, please leave a comment, good or bad...
And any questions, feel free to ask!

The first time i made a taser out of one of those cameras, I got shocked bad, Bloody hurts.......
And if u want extra capacitors for more power, like dodges set up, try replacing the original with one out of a CRT computer monitor

well, add 30 more cameras and it could be a human mouse trap

you would only need 10 or so

Dodge

Jun 25, 2007 6:07 am -
Yep. If that. As long as you space the grid properly...
The grid above is spaced just so a mouse would have one front foot on one polarity, and the other foot on the other polarity. That makes the current flow through the chest, zapping the heart. I bet one camera could kill you, if it went hand-to-hand...

Dodge

Jun 25, 2007 6:22 am -
Oh, also... I forgot to add in the egg, remove the little light that says it’s charged. It’ll make the batteries last a lot longer. Some of the lights are LED, which isn’t too bad... The ones with the glass bulbs work off the high voltage, and sap off a lot of energy.

5* you know Dodge...Im going to use this same design but to something much eviler, think of this AS A DOORMAT with a bit more amps. Find some kids that like to run around barefoot in the summer...HMWAHAHAHAHAHA.. ....

YOU ARE A BITCH

Did you watch the video on RER’s egg where the mouse like scrabbles from the electric shock?

One that i saw a long time ago on here didnt even kill the mouse at all, you just put a cardboard tube halfway off a table over a trash can with some type of bait in the end. the mouse walks in and the tube falls over into the can. then you just let it go in the field somewhere.

Dodge

Jun 25, 2007 3:04 pm -
^Deathloc^ Yeah, I saw that one... Very cool method. Unfortunately, you have to set up a tube for each mouse, and let them go somewhere. This one rearms itself after each mouse... And you just throw the mouse in the garbage... :-D

^^Restricted^^ I used to hunt chipmunks that way.... 12 ga., 00 buckshot. I’d shoot them, and there’d be nothing left. Just a red mist where it was sitting...

^^^Tuffy^^^ Yeah... That video was great! Lol’d.
That’s where the inspiration for this egg came from....

^^^^Alex 34545^^^^ It’d leave some nice burn marks...

^^^^^ShadowedPy o^^^^^ That’d work... Burn their feet between the wires... Just don’t do the multiple capacitors... That’d be too much. :-P

^^^^^^Suzuki^^^^^^ I’ll look into that... It’d be pretty brutal, if the circuit can handle the much larger cap...

Thanks everyone for the great comments, and the ratings!
I just wish the downraters would comment...

Damn nice egg.

I was going to do something similar to this to our squirrels by putting a grid around a corn cob for one contact and a wrap of chicken wire around the corn cob for the other contact. That way when the squirrel takes a bite, POP!
