SOURCE ENGINE: TRICKS OF THE TRADE
If you don\\’t play CSS/Source SDK BASE Mods don\\’t bother reading this egg, as you will be bored shitless amongst other things.
This guide is intended for default key use, though i personally do not have the default setup, and find some default keys in ridiculous places (e.g crouch). Most of these will apply over multiple source engine games (CSS), mainly Source Mods (Dystopia, SourceForts etc)
Not all of these will work in the source game of your choosing, these are just source bugs which many games do not bother to fix. Anyway, on with the show.
I\\’ll start with the most basic and needed trick to survive in any source game, crouchjumping:
To crouchjump there are two ways:
A) - Pick up some speed by holding w
- Press the jump key
- About 1/4 of a second later press and hold crouch
B) - Pick up some speed by holding w
- Press the crouch button
- About a 1/4 of a second later press space and hold both
I would recommend A) as it makes you move a further distance then B. But both get you up onto \\"unreachable by normal jumping objects\\".
Ladder running:
This is a source bug that applies to ladders, and means that if you move up a ladder sideways you get about a 50% speed increase (depending on the game, CSS its more like 25% but whatever).
- Start climbing your ladder
- Turn 35 degrees (ish) so the ladder is just in your corner of sight
- Hold W and A/D depending on which side the ladder is on
- You should zoom up that ladder in seconds
This will also give you a huge boost in comparison to what you normally get when leaving the top of a ladder, meaning you can get to some unreachable places (E.G the edge of a map)
Wall running:
When running forwards and along a wall you will get around a 15% speed increase in certain games. This can be useful when running to the middle grounds/camping spot etc. I have seen different variations of this, one where you run using W+direction of wall. And another where you skim the wall whilst turned slightly into it. Both work fine. Note: Doesn\\’t work with CSS
Long Distance Jumping:
A long distance jump is probably the hardest thing you can learn. As you may have noticed source has apalling strafe jumping code. This is one of the best ways (asides from bunny hopping) to abuse it.
- Run like normal towards whatever your trying to longjump
- Just before jumping turn 45 degrees (VITAL TO GAIN THE DISTANCE COMPARED TO A NORMAL LEAP)
- Press D (let go of W) then crouch a split second after
This should all happen in about 0.5 seconds, and will make you jump an extra 2 boxes if i remember correctly. (The smallest box in the design mode for source maps)
Wiggle walking:
This mainly applies to a game called Dystopia, but i\\’ve seen it in one or two other mods (Battlegrounds 2 for instance).
Repeatedly tap A+D as fast as you can while holding down W, this should (if the game permits it, CSS doesnt) give you a speed boost of around 30%.
Bunnyhopping:
Good old bunnyhopping. Again this is a source bug which is abused by the more \\"pro\\" players. You will first need to make sure your mouse turns 35 degree\\’s easily and you can repeat the motion back and forth. You may need to change sensitivity settings to start off learning it.
- Start off by launching yourself with one of the strafe keys (from running), lets say D
- You want to press D and space together, as well as letting go of W in one quick movement
- Once in the air you want to move your mouse 35 degrees right (following your strafe movement (HOLD THE STRAFE KEY))
- Just before you hit the ground press the opposite strafe key and space (whilst centering your mouse)
- Move your mouse 35 degrees left
- Rinse, lather, repeat
Midair turning:
This is most useful in maps like SCOUTSKNIVES (CSS) etc where you get low gravity, and can be easiest learnt in such a place, but applies to nearly all source games.
- Run along as normal
- Jump, then press the strafe direction you want to turn in
- Hold that strafe key down
- Turn in the same direction with your mouse slowly and smoothly (play about with how fast you turn the mouse to see what works best for you, i find moving at a smooth consistent speed and ending at a 90 degree angle (to where you started looking) makes for the best turns with normal grav
