ok so im 16 and just got my learners july 14th, and now im on the 8 or 9 mth wait to get my liscence.

My mom wont let me get anything until
I have my liscence but I recently was looking and found a non turbo 1980 something im guessing 1984-89 it has t-tops hideaway head lights and is like a orange/red color 6speed stick shift there is rust on the rear wheel wells and it does not run.

I do not know much about these so I thought some of you might know like if it is rear wheel drive and if you could find a web sight that sells mod parts specifically for them im assuming its like an 84-85. Also any ideas or suggestions about it

standard kicks ass. but just some advice i’d find another car. you’d probably spend more money fixing it than just buying a running car.

yeah I know what you mean but I thought it would be an excellent project and I dont think it would be overly hard to fix up I have a little experience with bondo and body work

So is that bondo going to make it magically start up?

I hope you can bondo your transmission, cause thats great you can fix the pretty stuff, but what happens when mechanical shit starts going to hell?

Ultimately its your decision, I’m just saying, "GYPYRD-S MUELSON" is right, you will probably spend less money if you just find a newer car. I don’t understand why you are dipping so far into the past, I mean 80’s cars are coming up on 30 years old... You realize how much stuff goes to shit in that time, not to mention many cars made in that time are complete junk technology wise. (And trust me, I’m not bashing the 300zx, it was, and I suppose still is a technological marvel) Automotive technology has made leaps and bounds in the last couple decades.

Why don’t you look for a 90’s car? You’ll end up spending less money in gas and in repairs in the end.

I meant bondo for the rear end of the car where there is rust so that it can be painted and I also know a bit about engines just not enough to find out what is wrong I could fix it its just to find the problem and the reason for the "old" car is because I want a project I was looking for something cheap for a side project while I Restore my step dads truck(I started working in an auto body shop and my step dad has an old truck he wants to give to me after its all fixed but its auto so I dont want it but im still redoing it for him (was in roll over)) I do not want it because im looking for something nothing less than 4 speed and I found this car and still do not know what there asking but I talked to this girl that its on her old land and she said for next to nothing probably. Sooo its cheap standard has other things on it thart are of my interest and it one of the original drift cars whitch my sisters friend owns the only drift shop in the city where they live and im probably going to see if I can turn it into a drift car.

Well had you said all that in the beginning I wouldn’t have even bothered to go on about all that crap, lol.

Personally, if I had the money for upkeep and all that, I would get the Twin Turbo (Z32) in a heartbeat... But I don’t :[ haha

Anyways, I still think you should get a different car as your first car. I know you want a project car and all, but whats stopping you from getting a good car and then waiting maybe a few months (to save up money) and then buying your project car? Trust me, you are going to want something more reliable for your first car otherwise you are going to curse the damn thing everytime you have to repair something on it, and you end up dumping 3 times the amount of the car into it [snaps out of memories and comes back to reality]

I mean, you wouldn’t be putting on the road while you’re working on it anyways, so insurance won’t even come into play until you’re done working on it.

However, again I bring up the cost factor of an old car though... You say this girl told you its "sitting on her land" which leads me to believe its sitting outside and not being cared for. Granted she said there is no rust, but I highly doubt she looked at the underside and at any of the mechanical workings of the car, rather she glanced at the paint job and said it looked good. If the underside and parts are all rusted out, it no longer is going to just be a fun project car, it will be a large rebuild project (I say this because you said you wanted to make it into a drift car, which while putting stress on your car also would make me assume you want it to look flashy and good, rusted components don’t look good lol.) You say you want a cheap restore project, look into 80’s/early 90’s Camaro’s/Firebirds, Foxbodies (Mustangs), etc. Trust me, a Nissan 300ZX will not be a "cheap on the side project", anything that breaks on it will be costly and a massive pain in the ass to fix.

Just so you know, I’m not trying to shoot you down here or insult you, I’m just telling you, it will probably be one of those things that you will get into and after hitting roadblock after roadblock, you will say "God damnit car, I hate you and your repairs, GAH!"

haha

ive looked at it close up and there was only rear wheel well rust and I asked her because I thought it might be her dads and Its accually her brothers friends and by cheap I mean a car cheap to buy not fix

Alright, well as long as you’ve looked at it, the way you had it worded, I thought you meant you were going solely off her de5cription.

I’ve just had some "interesting" times when I did that. He said "minor body damamge"... Turns out his "minor body damage" equates to the fact the tailgate was hanging on diagonally by a single bent bracket because someone had bashed into it. Haha

Hey, well, if you do end up getting the car, or hell, even if you don’t and still feel like doing it, upload some pics, I’m actually quite curious as to what the car looks like now. Also, if you do end up getting the car, you definitely need to upload a shit-ton of pictures of the car before the restoration and after, and in the process pictures. I love seeing a project take shape, and being able to compare before and after.

Keep us (or at least me haha :D) updated.

Oh damnit, I almost forgot to give you what you originally asked for, haha.

http://www.streetperfor ance.com/MARKETPLACE/

htt ://www.autoanything.com/ca /93A1.aspx

Both of them are quite decent (Though I like the street performance one much more) at getting what you want for your car, even if you can’t buy it off of one of them, it will at least give you the model number and whatnot so you can go somewhere else and look for it specifically. At least these places give you a start. I’ve used them successfully to buy parts for my ummm [cough]1999 Ford Taurus SE[cough] lol.

Also, keep in mind though, you will always be able to find more stuff for your car (also, probably better stuff as well) in a specialty shop, especially for the kind of things you want.
