As a student of Japanese Culture, one of my favorite
hobbies is making the Bonsai Tree. These are easy and fun to make.
Cultivation:
Bonsai can be created from nearly any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub species which produces true branches and remains small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning. Some species are popular as bonsai material because they have characteristics, such as small leaves or needles, that make them appropriate for the compact visual scope of bonsai. The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower). By contrast with other plant-related practices, bonsai is not intended for production of food, for medicine, or for creating yard-sized or park-sized landscapes. As a result, the scope of bonsai practice is narrow and focused on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees in a single container.
Sources of bonsai material:
Junipers, small Cedars, Oaks, Pines, Japanese Mapels
just to name a few.
Lets get started!!
Materials needed:
Small tree for Bonsai.
18 gauge copper wire
Natural fiber twine.
Shallow pot or bowl.
Wire cutters or snips and a razor blade.
Small bag of marble chips or colored rocks.
Bucket.
First step is to remove tree from it’s container.
Shake off dirt from roots into the bucket and save
the dirt for later use.
The next step is to "bind" the root ball with the twine. This will help to stunt the growth of the tree.
Next, we will trim the tree. This is where you will
need to use your imagination. Just think "old tree".
You want it to look like it’s been around for a long time.
Next, we will wire the tree with the copper wire.
This will do two things. First, it will help to stunt the growth of this tree and second, it will help with the training of the tree as you shape the branches.
The trunk and limbs should look like this:
Last step is to place the tree in the center of the bowl and replace the dirt you took off of the roots.
Place marble chips or colored rocks around the tree.
As an added touch you can find one unusual looking rock and add this as well.
Very important!!
Water your tree after you have completed putting it together and keep it indoors for the first week.
The tree will be in shock from being transplanted, trimmed and from the binding.
Oh, about the last 10 years or so.
I discover this art and was hooked.
It doesn’t take long to make these, and the
cost of materials is about $12-$15 bucks.
These babies sell at flea markets for about $25-$30
bucks. Not bad profit.
