Colorado police have arrested three men and a woman linked to white supremacist groups and armed with sniper rifles in what one has admitted was a plot to kill US presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Police stopped a car in Denver on Sunday after it was seen "weaving" through traffic and found two high-powered rifles with scopes and ammunition, local newspapers reported.

One of the car’s occupants, 28-year-old Tharin Robert Gartrell, was taken into custody and charged with suspicion of being a felon in possession of a weapon.

It is understood police escorted Gartrell to his sixth-floor hotel room, where a second man reportedly jumped out of a window when police knocked at the door.

The man, named as 33-year-old Shawn Robert Adolf, tried to hide in the bushes but was discovered by police, who said he had a broken ankle and had possessed weapons.

Adolf, 32-year-old Nathan Johnson and an unnamed woman have been arrested on drugs or weapons charges, Denver’s examiner.com reported.

One of the men told police the group was "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle … sighted at 750 yards", according to CBS4’s Brian Maass.

"(He) was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."

Mr Obama is in the city for the Democratic National Convention where he will accept his party’s official nomination for president on Thursday night.

Network NBC reported two of the men arrested sported the tattoos and jewellery associated with white supremacists.

"We are all on high alert," Glendale Police Chief Victor Ross was quoted in the Denver Post as saying.

"We don’t know if there are any ties to the DNC but we’re always concerned when we find weapons."

Police said methamphetamines, camouflage gear, walkie-talkies and driving licences in the names of other people were also found in the car.

"It could also turn out that these were nothing but a bunch of knuckleheads, meth heads," a US government official was quoted in the Associated Press as saying, wishing to remain anonymous.

Police will hold a press conference today 4pm local time (8am tomorrow AEST) to discuss the arrests.
